‘The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.‘
William James [1842-1910]
These words were written more than a hundred years ago, and suggest to me that the idea of Mindfulness is not such a new one! At one level, the idea that we have the power to alter our life by changing our mindset is quite comforting, and yet at another, quite daunting, as anyone who has experienced a determinedly strong mind that constantly draws you back to old ways of thinking or being, will testify.
And yet… I agree with James’ statement. It may not be easy to achieve, but I know from personal experience that it can be done. The two thoughts on this I’d like to share with you are these: that by practising breathing, we really can make a difference to our attitude of mind, and that if we allow ourselves to bask in the presence of someone who is genuine and authentic, they can become a doorway to strength and power.
Choosing how and when we breathe and who we choose to draw alongside can make a huge difference to our mental, physical and spiritual health.
